School Guidance Counselor

Qualifications
Certified School Counselor
Master’s degree in school counseling
Experience or training as a School Counselor in the UK, Canada, Australia, the U.S., etc. is preferred
Experience working with children K–5th grade is preferred
Knowledge of counseling models, methods, and resources
Responsibilities (based on the Danielson framework)
Demonstrates a knowledge of child development
Establishes goals for the counseling program based on school need
Creates an environment of respect and rapport
Establishes a culture for productive communication
Mediates and improves relationships between students, parents, and teachers
Assesses student needs
Conducts assessments to determine students’ strengths, weaknesses, interest, and aptitudes
Assists students and teachers in the formulation of academic and personal/social plans based on student needs
Provides students with support and guidance on how to deal with problems
Works with students to develop and improve their skill set
Uses counseling techniques in individual, small group and classroom programs
Communicates with families
Engages in ongoing professional development
Refers students to other support services and mental health professionals as needed
