Position Summary
St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju seeks a compassionate, student-centered counselor for a one-year maternity cover position in the 2025–2026 academic year. This unique role blends 50% social-emotional counseling with 50% college counseling, offering comprehensive support to high school students as they navigate both personal development and post-secondary planning.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to student well-being, be skilled in crisis response, and possess a strong understanding of the college application process in both the U.S. and other global systems. Experience in international and boarding school contexts is highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
Social Emotional Counseling (50%)
Student Support & Crisis Management
Build and maintain trusting, supportive relationships with students.
Provide individual counseling and on-call crisis support.
Advise school leadership on interventions for critical situations.
Program Development & SEL Instruction
Design and implement proactive wellness initiatives, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
Teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons across high school grade levels.
Provide individual and small-group counseling aligned with student developmental needs.
Collaboration & Communication
Serve as a visible, approachable presence for students and staff, embodying SJA Jeju’s core values.
Communicate regularly with students, parents, and faculty to ensure aligned support.
Participate in advisory and contribute to student mentorship programs.
Professional Development & MTSS
Lead PD sessions for faculty on Tier 1 classroom-based SEL strategies.
Support staff in identifying and responding to student well-being concerns.
Work within the school’s MTSS framework to provide differentiated support.
Serve as the College Board SSD Coordinator, managing accommodations and documentation.
College Counseling (50%)
Student Guidance & University Planning
Advise students on all aspects of post-secondary planning, including university research, applications, essays, and interviews.
Provide individualized guidance for students in grades 10–12, ensuring alignment with academic goals and personal interests.
Assist with course selection and academic planning related to university admissions.
Family & Faculty Engagement
Communicate regularly with families to support the college application process.
Collaborate with teachers to write effective recommendations and ensure holistic student support.
Programming & Events
Support the planning and execution of college counseling events, such as university fairs, information sessions, and workshops.
Assist with coordination of university visits and college representative meetings.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, school counseling, or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years of experience providing social/emotional counseling to high school students, ideally in an international setting.
Experience supporting students through the college application process.
Fluent in English with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must meet Korean visa requirements, including a clean background check with no criminal record.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in school counseling or a related field.
Certification as a school counselor.
Experience in a boarding school or residential setting.
Familiarity with U.S., UK, and/or other international university application systems.
Fluency in Korean and/or Mandarin Chinese is a plus.
