Reporting To: Head of English
Responsible For: All allocated students, both academically and pastorally

JOB SUMMARY:

The English specialist will deliver the CIE IGCSE English Language and Literature courses and the Y7-9 English Programme of study based on the internationally adapted England and Wales curriculum. Within these areas, the teacher will be responsible for delivering high quality learning, through planning engaging lessons to enable all students to make the best possible progress.

There is also the opportunity to deliver Middle School Drama.

A Dulwich teacher must be able to demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and communicate this in enthusiastic and imaginative ways. In addition, they will be expected to contribute to the development and extra-curricular life of the school, as well as that of the department.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Develop, maintain, and stimulate students’ curiosity, interest, and enjoyment in English.
Mark work and assessments according to departmental and College marking policies, giving appropriate and timely feedback, and maintaining records of students’ progress in English.
Employ assessment for learning strategies and personalise the learning of all students, as appropriate.
Provide both support and challenge for every student and to encourage all students to achieve their potential in Economics, including EAL (English as an Additional Language) and AEN (Additional Educational Needs) specific strategies.
Develop students’ understanding and applications of English in its wider context, reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Develop students’ critical thinking and analytical abilities.
Demonstrate a willingness to put students first and to invest extra time to ensure students achieve their very best.
Make sure that the classroom is a stimulating environment that facilitates learning.
Set homework according to policy and pertinent to the student’s ability and wider workload.
Participate in the HoD and SSLT (Senior School Leadership Team) classroom visits.
Undertake report writing and the award of internal grades as required.

DEPARTMENTAL

Contribute to and engage in English extra-curricular and enrichment activities (e.g., ECAs (Extra Curricular Activities), intervention, competitions)
Share best practice within the department.
Carry out any reasonable subject-related duties assigned by the Head of Department.
Attend departmental and moderation meetings as requested by the Head of Department.
Contribute to the department’s devising of new subject materials when required.
Be familiar with the departmental policies’ contents and follow the guidance and schemes of work closely.

PASTORAL AND EXTRA CURRICULAR

Be prepared to undertake the pastoral role of a form tutor.
Manage student behaviour both in the classroom and around the College building, including:
-establishing an orderly working environment

-adhere to and enforce the College’s policies on uniform, rewards and sanctions

Contribute imaginatively to the extracurricular and sporting programmes of the College as required by the Head of Department, Director of Sports, and ECA Coordinator.
Ensure familiarity with the College’s health and safety guidance and be responsible for their own health and safety and that of their students.
Participate in the College’s Adventurous Journeys programme.

OTHER DUTIES

Support and foster the mission and values of the College.
Carry out other duties, including cover for absent colleagues and examination invigilation.
Complete weekly break, lunch and bus duties, as allocated by Senior School Deputy Head Academic.
Attend staff meetings, parents’ evenings, professional development and similar important functions both in and out of normal College hours, as well as participating in the annual Founders Day.
Notify their Head of Department and the Deputy Head Academic as early as possible if they are going to be absent from College and set rigorous, appropriate work.
Take part in the College’s performance management and appraisal scheme.

REQUIREMENTS

Appropriate degree, with PGCE, or other teaching qualification giving QTS
Minimum three years’ teaching experience
Experience of teaching IGCSE English is desirable
Willingness to teach Middle School Drama is also desirable
Passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child
A high level of professionalism and consideration of the well-being of children
Recent and consistent involvement in extracurricular activities
Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age and ethnic background
Previous experience working with students for whom English is not their first language is desirable
A positive and solution-focused attitude to working life
Enhanced DBS disclosure.
